The very essence of modern America took root on the banks of the James River in 1607 at Jamestown, Virginia.

The goal of this very special anniversary is to capture the spirit, imagination and diversity of Virginia’s communities through programs, events and festivities that showcase Virginia’s unique role as the birthplace of America and the cradle of American democratic traditions, culture, ideologies and principles - 400 years strong!

In Augusta County, the Jamestown 2007 Committee invites you to participate in the celebration of our prehistoric and historic heritage, diversity of cultures, and richness of our natural resources. Experience our festivals, hike our trails, get an inside look at our farms, wander our backroads, soak in our heritage and visit our museums. COME HOME TO AUGUSTA COUNTY:  FREEDOM’S FIRST FRONTIER.

Some of the projects we have planned to celebrate our heritage include:

  • driving tours and maps highlighting Augusta’s history, culture and agricultural tradition
  • a permanent exhibit at the Augusta County Library portraying the County’s educational history
  • farm tours showcasing the county’s agricultural vitality
  • planting a heritage garden at the Government Center complex
  • a musical drama portraying Augusta County’s rich heritage
  • producing a commemorative woven full-color throw with images of some of the County’s historic sites
  • producing life-size, free-standing cutouts of some of the area’s early personalities with information sheet of their lives indicating their significance in our history
  • cooperating with other local organizations who are planning special activities for the Jamestown commemoration.
