Augusta County, once America’s western frontier, is now home to some of the Old Dominion’s finest rural landscape, historic landmarks and natural beauty. The area is rich in agriculture boasting a strong farming tradition tracing back to the first German, Scots-Irish, English and African-American pioneers, and carrying through to the present with the most cattle, sheep and farmland of any area in the state. Here you will see Civil War battlefields, quaint villages, historic structures and architecture in our towns, and 18th-century churches built when Revolution was in the air. However, before all this, Native Americans of various tribes lived in the Valley for thousands of years before the first settlers came. Some of their descendants still live in the Valley and area museums and special events pay tribute to those who first inhabited and cultivated the area. The County area has been home to many individuals who have gone down in history for their roles in exploration, medicine, the arts, industry, and families bearing two Presidents of the United States ~ William Sheppard, John Colter, Grandma Moses, Ida Stover Eisenhower, Woodrow Wilson, William Raines, Cyrus McCormick and Jed Hotchkiss, to name a few.
