Throws to raise money for Jamestown event

VERONA--The 4-by-6 throw embroidered with Augusta County landmarks was the main attraction. The 10-member committee ooh’d and ahh’d at the sight of the fringed fabric covered with images of eight sites, including the Blue Ridge Parkway and Grand Caverns.
Judith Cariker, who designed the throw with Nancy Sorrells, said they chose the landmarks based on each site’s historical significance.

About the Throws

For more information, contact the Augusta County Government Center at 245-5600.  Other vendors include the Augusta County Historical Society and the Shenandoah Valley Rural Heritage Foundation.

“It was a matter of sitting down and designing it, deciding what to put on it that was representative of the many facets of the county,” Cariker said.
The county’s Jamestown 2007 steering committee met Tuesday to discuss the projects planned for next year’s commemoration of the 400th anniversary of Jamestown.
Money from the throws, at $49 each, will help cover the costs of the projects, which include tours of local farms, a musical drama, gardens and educational activities. The committee ordered 200 throws, though more could be ordered if they sell well.
At the meeting, the committee also discussed the partnerships formed with Blue Ridge Community College and Augusta County Library.  Life-sized cardboard cutouts of historical figures can be seen at the library and people will have the chance to take pictures with them at the “Sweet Dreams” event at Stuarts Draft in July.
Sorrells said the partnerships expose more people to the county’s heritage and culture.
“They broaden our understanding of why this area is such a unique place,” she said.
After mulling over possible venues for the musical and different promotional methods, Sorrells said she was excited to see the projects taking form.
“A year and a half ago we were just throwing out ideas,” she said, “and now we have throws, cutouts, ideas for activities.”
The Board of Supervisors set aside $30,000 from meals and lodging taxes for the events, and sponsors include the News Leader, Mid-Valley Press and Hampton Inn.
